DONTNOD Returns to the Life is Strange Universe with a Free Game, ‘The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit’

Good news for fans of DONTNOD Entertainment’s Life is Strange: we’re not getting Life is Strange 2 just yet, but the developer announced plans to tide fans over by releasing a “narrative experience” set in the LiS universe. Announced at Microsoft’s E3 conference, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is releasing later this month on June 26. It’s been in the works for the last couple years, and the game will be available completely free of charge.

According to post from DONTNOD, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit has you playing as Chris, a 10-year old boy who dreams of excitement and heroic deeds. The story will serve as a standalone adventure, though its developer hinted than players will be able to find allusions to the plot of Life is Strange 2. It’ll be interesting to see what hints are dropped in the game, as LiS2 has been confirmed but otherwise kept under wraps up to this point.

Captain Spirit is also going to be structurally different from previous games, and players are likely to continue discovering pieces of the picture on subsequent play-throughs. Regardless, the game’s synopsis revolves around the artistry of its main character, reading, “Chris has a big imagination that will take him on all sorts of adventures, but on this particular Saturday something truly extraordinary will happen to him.”

DONTNOT expressed that this new entry in their universe is a step towards unlocking the “true potential” of Life is Strange. “For us, Life is Strange is so much more than a single set of characters, places, themes or scenarios,” DONTNOD wrote. “Life is Strange is an entire universe of storytelling founded upon relatable characters facing real world issues, but always with ‘a twist of the strange’ and we have many more stories we want to tell.”

The developer, and particularly Life is Strange’s Creative Directors (Michel Koch and Raoul Barbet), shared a few more thoughts about the project on a short development video. It was released alongside the game’s trailer, and you can take a look at the creation of Captain Spirit below.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit will release for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.

In my free time, I function as an unnecessarily specific gaming encyclopedia. I also play the violin, binge crime/detective procedural shows (still not sure why), and do a large amount of digital painting. I'm probably too attached to Dragon Age, but not really inclined to do anything about it. I'm a huge fan of cosplay, foxes, the prose of Jenny Lawson, and Strong Female Characters™.
