The recent and impressive success of Game Science’s sophomore title, Black Myth: Wukong, many fans have been curious whether the team will be working on DLC for the existing game or even a possible sequel after CEO of Hero Games, Daniel Wu, confirmed that an expansion is in the works.
Now, based on Tweets from publishing consultant Daniel Camilo, Black Myth: Wukong will be releasing DLC sometime around the Chinese New Year in late January 2025.
He states in his tweets that his information comes from an unnamed, first hand source close to the Black Myth: Wukong team. He does however, go on to state in the final tweet of the thread that, “Needless to say that plans can always change. While teams have internal plans and roadmaps, nothing is hardly ever set in stone when it comes to release dates in gaming…”.
Black Myth: Wukong has now sold around 20 million units world wide and also landed at number two all time for peak player count. It also managed to sell 10 million units within just 3 days of its release. Camilo, who is based in China, does speculate that by the time the DLC is released, the player base, which is 70+% Chinese according to sales, may lose interest.
The game has now sold +-20 million units.
I predict the dlc will sell through less than 20% of the total user base.
Why?
-Most sales came from China (70%+)
-Novelty & National pride factor will be gone for Chinese consumers once DLC releases
-The game is too challenging…— Daniel Camilo (@DanielOlimac) September 14, 2024
Camilo goes on to say that in his opinion, “The game is too challenging, and at least a few millions of the people who bought the game in China are not core/hardcore gamers. For many of those consumers, dlc simply won’t be an interesting proposition”.
