In the earliest instances of video games, combat was split cleanly between focusing on decision making and execution. While slower turn-based RPGs rewarded deep understanding of mechanics and long-term planning, more traditional games played in real time instead rewarded quick-thinking and individual victories. As the technology used to make games improved, both systems have been able to cross into one another. In the modern age of gaming, hybrid games that allow players to fight in real time with builds created beforehand have become prevalent, such as Dimraeth, a pixel-art action RPG coming to early access today.
To coincide with the release of the early access version of the game, developer and publisher Mudtek put out a cinematic reveal trailer featuring key pieces of the story and world. In it, the core conflict between the human and minotaur races is explained, with the only two brave enough to oppose it being the minotaur prince Antark and the human inventor Toleus. The story sees them travel to Dimraeth together to use the magic of the mountains to end the conflict before fighting against Sylbos, a wicked ogre mage. After the battle, a spell was cast to grant Sylbos immortality, spreading out into the world and beginning the player’s journey as their own immortal being.
The game’s Steam page breaks down much of the customization options that players will have available to them. To start, they will choose between eight races and six classes, which each grant access to unique combat traits like spells that can be equipped five at a time. Each enemy will have its own set of attacks with telegraphs, giving players a chance to express their skill as well as they’re creativity. Finally, in between adventures, players can begin constructing their base where they can invite allies for eight-player co-op.
Early access is often an important time for games with high amounts of customization, allowing developers to get ahead of unintended interactions or bugs between systems. Time will tell how Dimraeth uses the opportunity now that the game’s early access version is available on PC.
