In 2007, Devin Townsend, the former member of Canadian metal band Strapping Young Lad, released his solo metal rock opera album Ziltoid: The Omniscient. The album was massive hit with Townsend’s fans, and the lore behind Ziltoid has been expanded upon over the years. To add to the legacy of Ziltoid, it has been revealed that Devin Townsend is now working on a mobile game based around the lore of Ziltoid.
The story of Ziltoid starts off with the extraterrestrial being traveling to Earth to try the planet’s ultimate cup of coffee. After being appalled by its taste, Ziltoid decides to wage war on Earth for having a coffee so “fetid”. The story continues onward with Townsend’s 2014 album, Z², and Ziltoid even had a three-part puppet show mini-series prior to the release of the 2014 album.
Although there are no concrete details on the mobile game, David Townsend has posted on both Twitter and Instagram about his project with an unspecified mobile developer.
From the small details currently available, it appears that the game might incorporate some form of RPG elements. It appears at first that the player might be able to control the Ziltoidian army. It is not known if you will assume the roll of Ziltoid, who you will be fighting, or whether Ziltoid will wage war against another world over a cup of coffee. It is also not clear what mobile platforms the game will come to when it releases. Finally, and of course, the Ziltoid game will come with new music composed by Devin Townsend.
The true whipped cream on top of this latte is that Townsend seems to be putting his main focus into the mobile game, so this project might just be going full steam ahead until it is finished.
