Deus Ex: Universe Begins to Form…

Eidos Montreal announced that they are in the process of developing a new Deus Ex game for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4; the first in the series since 2011’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

However, there’s something very different about the way Eidos is approaching this new entry. They are developing what they have eloquently referred to as the “Deus Ex Universe”. Studio Head David Anfossi said, “It took us four years to create a unique Deus Ex experience with Human Revolution and it was important for me to keep this knowledge within the franchise.” It would seem then that Eidos has spared no avenue in their quest for a new experience.

In Deus Ex Universe, Eidos will combine several means of pop culture to create an entirely engrossing product.

No longer will the story of the game be contained within a single campaign; rather the story will expand beyond the game into books, graphic novels, and completely different games as well. Their aim is to “create an ongoing, expanding, and connected game world built across a generation of core games.”

They want to constantly and consistently evolve the Deus Ex franchise and give their fans an experience that expands beyond the limitations of a single game. The decision to expand the franchise into other forms of media means that Eidos believes their franchise to have global appeal. Furthermore, this plan is something we haven’t seen before, at least not to the degree expressed here. Could this be the next step in next generation gaming? After all, Xbox One announced that they would be developing a television show that would coincide with the events depicted in their new exclusive game Quantum Break. It’s an interesting move on all accounts and fundamentally changes the way we play our games.

Anfossi stated that the team at Eidos Montreal was working hard on developing the new game and plotting out the plans for Universe. He went on to reveal a single image from the new game that expresses the plot point of “trans-humanism segregation.” However, Anfossi says not to expect any more updates for a few months as the team continues to push forth into the new year.
