According to Eurogamer article, the popular video game franchise Deus Ex is being put on hiatus by developer Eidos Montréal. Supposedly, this is due in part to the fact that the latest game in the series, 2016’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, performed unimpressively in terms of sales, despite being received generally positively by both fans and critics.
Another likely reason for the hiatus is the recently announced partnership between Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix and its subsidiaries, which includes Eidos Montréal. Eurogamer sources claim that, due to the partnership, Eidos Montréal has been put in charge of the upcoming Tomb Raider game while Tomb Raider‘s regular developer, Crystal Dynamics, another Square Enix subsidiary, works on the first game in the Marvel series. After this, Eidos Montréal is set to work on the second Marvel game, which will reportedly be based on Guardians of the Galaxy. So Eidos Montréal has their hands full for a while and they probably decided that they didn’t have time for a series that no longer sells as well as it once did.
Many fans of the Deus Ex series were upset at Mankind Divided‘s many loose ends and unfulfilled story points. Many, if not all, of these were supposed to be addressed in the next Deus Ex game, which now looks like won’t happen, at least not for a while. However, some questions may be answered in the last of Mankind Divided‘s DLC, A Criminal Past, which is essentially a prequel to the main campaign. A Criminal Past is set to be released on February 23.
