The PlayStation 5 is now about 5 years old, and with the launch of a new console, exclusive games are released alongside it to incentivize consumers to purchase the console. And one of those games that launched around the PS5 window is Destruction AllStars, a live-service game that was met with mixed reviews. The game had some decent bones to it, but never truly clicked with players and took off, even with the advantage of being one of the first PS5 titles. Well, on May 26, Destruction AllStars was officially delisted from the PlayStation Store, and its servers were shut down. If you own the game, you can still play with bots until November 25, when the game completely shuts down.
The shutdown of Destruction AllStars has come as a shock to many, as it kinda just happened, no big post or announcement, just delisted and shut down, and a single notification from Sony via email. It’s a strange shutdown, as many games facing that outcome make a big announcement to give players a heads-up and allow the game to have one last go-around before it meets its end. An example would be the recent announcement of Spellcaster Chronicles shutting down. To most players, the game shutdown doesn’t come as much of a surprise, given how this year has been going for Sony and how they’ve been bleeding a lot of money on games that failed to capture players’ interest. Most of these games were bound for the chopping block.
In no way is this a good thing that Destruction AllStars shut down and got delisted. The loss of a game in the industry always leads to bad outcomes, such as layoffs or, worst-case scenario, a studio shutdown, but nothing has been said on that front, so I’m hoping nothing bad comes of this. But when a game shuts down, the consumer loses a game they enjoyed and any money spent on it if they purchased digital goods. Overall, never a good outcome, and it’s even worse that no official post was made that the game was being delisted and shut down. It just happened, and only an email to remember it by. If you own the game, you can still access it and play with bots, but online multiplayer is no more. All servers will be shut down on November 25, 2026, so if you wanna play, you have until then. Either way, this sucks on toast.
