The internet famous Toby Fox is back with another chapter of the action-adventure RPG Deltarune. This is the fifth chapter of the game, designed to exist in parallel universe to Undertale, the indie developer’s wildly successful 2015 release, and was announced during a Nintendo Direct earlier this month. It does not, however, include most Undertale characters.
Instead, Deltarune is meant to be a standalone game, inspired by a fever dream. It follows three heroes: Kris, a human teenager, a monster named Susie, and a prince from the ‘Dark World’ named Ralsei. The game utilizes a turn based combat system with bullet hell mechanics, and 2-Dimensional, pixelated graphics. Below is a short summary of each chapter, not including the multitude of alternate routes players can choose to take throughout the game.
The first chapter, The Beginning, released as a free demo in 2018. It began with a fake-out character creator before introducing Kris, the player character. Kris is partnered with Susie in school, but ends up entering a door into the Dark World. Players then team up with Ralsei and defeat a tyrannic team. It is then revealed that Dark Rooms and Darkners are reflections of normal rooms and objects before Kris removes their own soul, locks it, and pulls out a knife after traveling back to the human world.
A Cyber’s World, chapter two of Deltarune, continued the story by introducing new characters, including the main antagonist of the chapter called Queen. Queen is a computer who was able to create a new Dark World. After Queen is defeated, Kris once again tears out their soul, creating a new Dark Fountain by stabbing the living room floor. This is the final chapter to be released as a free demo, and after its release in 2021, players must pay to play the remainder of the story.
Chapters three and four, Late Night and Prophecy respectively, were released as a double update in June of 2025. Late Night introduces a personified television called Tenna, who hosts a talk show style mini game. Players must rescue the tutorial guide, Toriel, before defeating the Roaring Knight. Prophecy takes place in a local church, where players must once again defeat the Roaring Night before revealing a prophecy.
Chapter five, Festival Day, was released today as a free update, continuing the events of the previous chapters. This chapter takes place in a flower shop, where Kris must confront a popular Undertale character: Flowey. This is the last chapter of Deltarune to have a fun, lighthearted plot; the heavier material will be addressed in following chapters.
As of now, it appears that the game will wrap up with chapters six and seven, with the sixth chapter already in development. Festival Day is available on PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. The launch day trailer is available to view below from the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel.
