Mega Crit Games, the developers of the hit deckbuilding, card game, Slay the Spire, recently announced their plans to team up with Contention Games to launch a Kickstarter campaign soon to fund a board game based on it. As we have seen throughout 2020, many tabletop games have seen a large, sustained increase in funding campaigns on Kickstarter. Going into 2021, we can hopefully expect to see more board game versions of popular video games.
Slay the Spire is a roguelike card game where players are able to build their deck and fight unique creatures and bosses. It released for early access in 2017 on Steam and later fully released in 2019. It has received very positive reviews and its popularity has been sustained through 2020 and into 2021.
While the Kickstarter is not going to launch until sometime in the spring of 2021, we do have some basic information about how the reimagining of Slay the Spire as a tabletop game is going to work. It is being made by Contention Games which has previously designed a similar deckbuilding, board game, Imperium: The Contention. While the tabletop game will allow up to four players to play, there is also a solo mode for buyers to play individually. This mirrors the video game version which is only single-player, so it will be interesting to see how the multiplayer mode will work.
Fans will have to eagerly wait for more details to release and if you want to be notified of updates, you can sign up for Contention Games’ newsletter. But in the meantime, they can purchase Slay the Spire for $24.99 on Steam and on its other platforms like Nintendo Switch, iOS, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
