Death’s Gambit: Afterlife Overhauls Combat, Exploration, and More

Death’s Gambit, a souls-like 2D platformer about reaping the immortal for death itself, released back in 2018 with some fanfare. However, whether you loved the game, didn’t get a chance to play, or tried it and didn’t love it, now is the time to head back into Death’s Gambit as the brand new Afterlife update is on the way.

To call Death’s Gambit: Afterlife a mere update is almost underselling it. Almost every core system in the game has been overhauled in some major way, including the combat, movement, and the world itself, so the developers at White Rabbit recommend giving the game another shot even if you’ve played it all the way through before.

Afterlife is a full scale re-imagining of the original game that refines all the existing systems based on community feedback.
The update introduces brand new metroidvania upgrades to collect in order to fully explore the world, like double jumps and air stalling abilities. These upgrades will offer the player character much more vertical movement than in the last version of Death’s Gambit, which explains why developers have also altered the layouts of nearly every level in the game. These levels are now much larger to accommodate the player’s new skills and are paired with ten brand new levels to traverse, doubling the size of Death’s Gambit and making it one of the largest metroidvania games to dive into.
Along with all this, the combat of Death’s Gambit is also being altered by introducing a new and improved talent tree. This will allow players to pick up plenty of useful skills depending on their chosen character class, and will even let players multiclass to pick up skills in other classes. Altogether, there are now over a hundred skills to choose from, meaning that there will be more skill points to earn or collect in the expanded game world, so make sure to check every nook and cranny. You might even find one of the 22 brand new weapons that have been added to the game, each with a special attack unique to that weapon type.
If the player is getting new moves and tools, then it would stand to reason that the enemies of Death’s Gambit: Afterlife would evolve as well, and evolve they have. Four of the game’s bosses have been updated and even more have been added to the game, as well as content that extends beyond the previous ending, so there’s even a brand new final boss for players to challenge with multiple endings to boot.
Death’s Gambit: Afterlife does not have a release date yet, but publisher Serenity Forge says that Afterlife will be finished in 2021 for Xbox, Playstation, PC and for the first time, Switch. You can watch the full update trailer below.
