Going into today, everyone knew that a new Death Stranding trailer would be released. In a huge surprise, a release date of November 8, 2019 was revealed. What else was revealed was the stacked cast Kojima has gathered together to star in the game.
Up first is Norman Reedus who is best known for his roles on The Walking Dead, The Boondock Saints, and was going to star in Kojima’s ill fated Silent Hills. Reedus was first revealed to be involved with Death Stranding in the first trailer for the game at Sony’s E3 press conference in 2016. Reedus portrays the game’s protagonist Sam Porter Bridges. Bridges “must journey across a ravaged landscape crawling with otherworldly threats to save mankind from the brink of extinction.” He also seems to have ties to the former president of the United States, and is tasked with reuniting the country after the devastation that has occurred.
Initially revealed during the game’s second trailer at The Game Awards in 2016, both Guillermo del Toro, and Mads Mikkelsen finally had their characters’ names revealed. Mikkelsen, who has had major roles in such films like Doctor Strange, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and most recently Polar, will portray Cliff, though not much is known about him, who has “a good connection to the other side,” and looks to be possibly Death Stranding‘s primary antagonist. On the other hand, del Toro, director of Pan’s Labyrinth, Oscar winner The Shape of Water, and the upcoming Zanbato, will portray Deadman. Very little is known about Deadman, but he appears to work alongside Sam Bridges in some capacity as there are shots in the trailer of the two characters together.
Other character’s who have already been introduced received names as well. The prolific voice actor Troy Baker, who has portrayed the likes of Joel from The Last of Us, Revolver Ocelot in Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid V, and Sam Drake in Uncharted 4, finally had his character named as well. Formerly known as “The Man with the Golden Mask,” he is now offically named Higgs and is another antagonist in the game. Higgs appears to be the leader of a terrorist organization called “homo demons,” a deviation of homo sapiens, and appears to be at war with the UCA, Bridges’ group, over the independence of a city call Edge Knot City.
From the E3 2018 trailer, Léa Seydoux and Lindsay Wagner portray Fragile and Amilie respectively. Seydoux is known for her roles in films such as Inglorious Bastards, Spectre, and will star in the upcoming Bond 25. Wagner, on the other hand, is best known for her iconic role in the hit TV series The Bionic Woman. Fragile appears to be someone who Bridges meets along his journey and eventually joins his efforts. She also appears to have some ties to the “homo demons” as she is held at gunpoint by Higgs at one point in the trailer. Perhaps she’s a former member of the group. Amilie is someone special to Sam, possibly a family member. She was originally tasked with Bridges’ job of reuniting the country, but appears to have possibly died in the process. It is unknown how that impacts Bridges, but she may be appearing as hallucinations throughout the game.
Finally, three new characters were introduced. Tommie Earl Jenkins, a known voice actor, had his character officially revealed as Die-Hardman. Die-Hardman has a mechanical skull face attached to his face, and appears to also be a part of the UCA and works with Bridges throughout his journey.
The other characters that debuted were Heartman and Mama. Heartman is portrayed by Nicolas Winding Refn, director of such films as Drive and The Neon Demon, and appears to possibly be the tech guru of the group similar to Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid series character Otacon. Mama is portrayed by Margaret Qualley, best known from the TV series The Leftovers, and also appears to be part of the UCA. Mama appears in a few scenes throughout the trailer, and seems to might have some form connection to the supernatural beings known as BTs.
With Death Stranding now only a few months away, it will be interesting to see how this stacked cast brings Kojima’s brand of storytelling to life. Eager fans only have to wait until November to find out.
