The most improbable of sequels officially has a release date. Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise will launch this year on July 10 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. The game serves as both prequel and a sequel to the first Deadly Premonition as you’ll once again play as FBI Agent Francis York Morgan. The game’s announcement from last year took the video game world by surprise, especially since most of us never even considered that it would ever come to pass. We’re not going to get too much into the story, but just know that it’s one of the strangest, funniest, and most interesting plots in gaming history.
Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise takes place in modern-day Boston where you’ll be tasked with solving numerous murders from the past that occurred in Le Carre, Louisiana by accessing the memories of a former agent. You will then take on the role of York himself to investigate the serial killings in the town during that time, making the story intertwine with the past and the present. As York, you’ll be able to travel by foot, or by skateboard in case you want to bring out your inner Tony Hawk. As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also be able to upgrade York’s skateboard skills as well as partake in mini-games such as bowling, the bayou ride, and the skateboard challenge. All while investigating a killing spree.
Anyone who’s familiar with the series Creative Director, Hidetaka Suehiro, also known as SWERY, knows that not everything is as it seems. This is most evident in the first game, Deadly Premonition which came out for the Xbox 360 in 2010. It didn’t exactly set the gaming world on fire, at least not at first. The controls were clunky and awkward, and many pointed out that nearly everything in the game is near-identical to the popular suspense show Twin Peaks.
Yet, despite all of these shortcomings, the game’s popularity continued to grow, so much that it eventually garnered a cult following. This prompted a re-release for the PlayStation 3 in 2013, which slightly improved the technical flaws seen in the first iteration. In 2019, the game was brought to the Nintendo Switch as Deadly Premonition: Origins which paved the way for its sequel. It will be interesting to see what SWERY does with the final product. One thing is for sure though, no matter how much we’re looking forward to it, we’re more than likely not ready for it.
