Dead Cells Sells Over 10 Million Copies and Continues to Plan Updates for the Game Through 2025

Dead Cells is a roguelike Metroidvania game that originally came out for early access on May 10, 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), developed by Motion Twin and Evil Empire. According to Gematsu, recently, Dead Cells has sold over 10 million copies since its release six years ago and the developers have claimed that further updates are planned through 2025. Although Motion Twin and Evil Empire have not revealed what many of these updates will include, it is important to note that the game will be available for PlayStation 5 on August 11 of this year.

Over its lifespan, Dead Cells has made quite the impact, winning several awards after officially launching in 2018. Some of the awards they won were: “Best Indie Game” at the Golden Joystick Awards for 2018, “Best Action Game” at The Game Awards in 2018 and 2018’s “Best Indie Game” at New York Game Awards. Currently on Steam, the game is rated overwhelmingly positive, with an 89 on Metacritic.

At the moment, Dead Cells already has multiple bundles and DLCs available for fans who are currently invested in the game. Additionally, the game has not only received a total of 34 free updates, but the eventual launch of the game on mobile helped propel the game into the success that it is today. Hitting 10 million downloads is a very impressive feat, which makes it all the more impressive that they managed to achieve this as an independent title, without large-scale support.

The game has been updated and improved over the last six years, which has garnered it 10 million copies sold. As the game continues to update and progress over the next two years, only time will tell how much more success the game can garner over the remainder of its lifespan.
