Dead Cells Is Getting An Animated Series

In a surprise and exciting announcement today, developer Motion Twin has revealed Dead Cells will be getting the animated series treatment next year. Alongside the announcement came a teaser trailer just under a minute long. The animated series will be produced by French animation studio Bobbypills and co-produced by Animation Digital Network.

A brief description of the show states, “After the island’s foolish king develops a remedy that ends up turning the population into monstrous creatures, prophecies depicting a flame-headed hero begin to appear. As it so happens this beheaded hero is real, but saving a kingdom isn’t on his schedule and he just wants to be left alone.”

Currently, there are not a lot of details provided, however, there will be 10 episodes in total, each around 7 minutes in length. The short teaser only gives a few shots, however, they’re all in the style of the iconic Dead Cells aesthetic. There’s also the titular background music Dead Cell fans are reminiscent of hearing.

French animation studio Bobbypills is also currently producing Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix from the Far Cry series which is set to release on Netflix later this year.

Dead Cells first released in 2018, a roguelike-metroidvania, became a commercial success for developer Motion Twin. It’s fast-paced action, with light Souls-inspired mechanics, gorgeous art style and graphics, and addictive replayability has helped keep Dead Cells still popular today. It’s on nearly every platform from desktop, to console, and even mobile. Dead Cells has also received numerous DLCs that have expanded the lore and gameplay. Just recently in March, Dead Cells released Return to Castlevania, which saw the iconic crossover of the beloved decades-old franchise that inspired Dead Cells itself.  As well it was recently announced that Dead Cells has sold 10 million copies to date, and has plans ahead for the series.
