DC Universe Online, Planetside 2 and Warframe Confirmed for PS4

Sony have announced three free-to-play MMORPGs for the PS4, fulfilling their promise to make make free-to-play gaming an integral part of the next generation, as well as an unspoken promise to bring old PC games to PS4. DC Universe Online, Planetside 2 and Warframe will be the first games to test the PS4 free-2-play waters but their success could very well see the development of PS4-exclusive MMORPGs.

Planetside 2 is a fast paced MMO First Person Shooter that pits two armies of real players against each other. In PS2‘s enormous battlefields, strategy is required almost as much as shooting people in the face to win battles. Players are able to select from six infantry classes ranging from a Light Assault trooper to the Mechanized Assault Exo-Suit monster trooper and will have to fight in unison (as much as possible) with their comrades to succeed. Note: Actual players may not act as professional as the dudes in the video. Don’t be surprised if one of your team-mates is an authority on your mother’s sex life.

DC Universe Online has been on the PS3 since the start of 2011 and, after a rocky start, has been free-to-play since the end of 2011. It is notable as the only free-to-play MMORPG that succeeded on the current generation of consoles and survives on in-game micro-transactions. The trailer doesn’t reveal anything specifically new about the PS4 version but it does use the word “new” a lot.

Warframe, a game we’ve never heard of, was apparently released on PC this march and was made by Star Trek developer Digital Extremes. It’s billed as an online multiplayer co-op 3rd person shooter and looks pretty enough, even if the gameplay itself does seem a little lacklustre. It’ll be interesting to see how the game changes as it adapts to the Dualshock 4 controller.
