Revealed today at the DC Fandome event, the upcoming game Gotham Knights reveals itself to be set in a different universe, rather than being a sequel to Batman: Arkham Knight. The trailer, along with eight minutes of gameplay, shows the city of Gotham in civil chaos after the (apparent) death of Batman himself, calling upon his different allies and prodigies to help save the city. All of this boils down to said allies fighting against the Court of Owls (which first appeared in a 2011 edition Batman No.3.).
The trailer shows playable characters Robin and Batgirl (with other characters such as Nightwing and Red Hood) as they chase down Mr. Freeze. At the same time of this segment, the game maker also hints at possible character customization possibilities. This open-world game is also supposed to feature many other famous Batman villains that the players are supposed to face (like the many Batman centered games beforehand). Both Robin and Batgirl are said to “use a variety of abilities, weapons, and unique combat moves to neutralize their foes”. Gotham Knights is developed by Warner Bros. Montreal, who was also behind the game Batman: Arkham Origins, and is set to be released in 2021.
This trailer also comes after the DC developers hinting at the game last Monday, with a cryptic tweet from the account @r3dakt3d (aka “redacted with the number 3 replacing each E). At the same time, many fans also speculated that this would be the next installment in the DC games universe after many DC-related game domains were discovered to be owned by Warner Brothers.
The DC Fandom event is set to be a free virtual 24-hour convention for fans of DC superheroes. At this event, different movies, games, comics, and TV series were set to be revealed, most notably Jame Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Batman.
