Darkest Dungeon Has Now Sold More Than 6.5 Million Copies, Sequel Sells More Than 300 Thousand in Early Access

It’s hard to believe but it’s been more than seven years since the popular rogue-like title Darkest Dungeon launched. Releasing back in January 2016, the indie title quickly become one of the most critically acclaimed titles of the year. In an interview with Op Attack, the developers of the title, Red Hook Studios, revealed that the game has now officially sold more than 6.5 million copies on all available platforms. In addition, they also mentioned that the sequel, Darkest Dungeon II, has sold over 300,000 units during the Early Access phase. The latter is slated officially launch this month on May 8.

It’s important to note that the Early Access for Darkest Dungeon II is currently exclusive on the Epic Games Store. That being said, it will be available for both the former and the Steam platform when it releases early next week. Home console versions are still in development and will be released at a later time. Darkest Dungeon II started development way back in 2018, a couple of years after the first entry launched. Darkest Dungeon received a plethora of post-launch content and support, something that the developer plans on continuing with the sequel. “We hope to support DDII with a combination of free updates and paid DLC for a long time,” the developer stated. “We have some DLC plans, but our studio’s entire focus is on making DDII 1.0 the very best it can be. We’ll share more about future content releases at a later date.”

As we already mentioned, Darkest Dungeon was a major success for Red Hook Studios. The title shipped million units in its first year of being available, which is an insane accomplishment for an indie title, let alone a AAA title. Like the sequel, went through a period of Early Access before officially launching for multiple platforms, which included the ill-fated handheld PS Vita. Darkest Dungeon II will officially launch next week on May 8 for PC through the Epic Games Store and Steam.
