In another attempt to make the infamously challenging Dark Souls even more of a battle, FTRicher’s Prepare to Die Again mod relocates the base game’s NPCs, bonfires, and enemies in an attempt to recapture the excitement of that first jarring adventure through Lordran.
This mod takes Benzoin-Gum’s enemy randomizer mod for Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin to another level through expanding changes on all pivotal game permanents. Rather than randomizing only certain areas, this mod alters the enemy spawn points for the entire game, leaving no familiar zones. Some areas will contain larger changes, while others are only slightly modified. Certain enemies will be added to areas they did not originally inhabit, and others are deleted entirely (including the demon torso’s from Lost Izalith, to everyone’s benefit). A few corpses in the world where players can loot items from have been rotated, and chests have also been moved around from their respective locations.
Of the most interesting and meticulous aspects of the mod, FTRicher has stayed true to the game’s lore. This mod does not add enemies to zones that they would not reside in according to the lore. For instance, the randomizer isn’t true in the sense that there is a possibility of seeing a Darkwraith in Anor Londo, or Stone Knights in Undead Parish. Additions have been made to extend the lore as much as possible through changing and adding certain NPC zones that made sense according to questlines. This includes finding Iron Tarkus in Anor Londo, as was stated in the item description when finding his corpse, but never actually seen by players.
This mod allows for multiplayer when users are interacting with other players who also have the mod installed. Though, FTRicher still recommends that players using this mod do so offline, given that they can still be invaded by users not using the mod, which causes strange multiplayer behavior.
This mod is currently available on PC for free, and has received multiple updates since the initial release. Keeping eyes on the mod site will ensure players don’t miss the latest update.
