For those that were worried that Cyberpunk 2077 might have been done for, we have some exciting news for you. According to the Steam Database Charts, as well as being tweeted by well known video game statistician Benji-Sales, the title is having a major resurgence. According to the post, Cyberpunk 2077 had roughly 85,555 concurrent players on Steam yesterday, the game’s highest player base count on the platform since January 2021, the month after it launched.
As you can see in the tweet above, Cyberpunk 2077’s sudden rise is most likely due to the Netflix anime adaptation Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’s release and immediate success. CD Projekt Red also released some Edgerunner content for the main game, giving players new and old a reason to go back into the world of Night City. The content includes “including new missions, clothing, and weapons” all based from the Netflix series. The 1.6 patch also brings transmogs, one of the most intricate and invaluable assets in any type of RPG.
The development, release, and aftermath of Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most infamous sagas in video game history, and has been well documented up to this point. While the game as a whole was generally well received, the game was released in near broken state, rendering it unplayable by a good amount of players. This brought a mammoth amount of disreputation upon the once squeaky clean CD Projekt Red which was included an apology the studio co-founder, Sony removing the PlayStation 4 version from their store, then reinstating it with warning six months later, and a class action lawsuit that involved the company’s investors.
