Just today, new information was released about the upcoming science fiction RPG, Cyberpunk 2077. The video game developer CD Projekt Red and the the tabletop company Cmon announced that they were creating a card game to go along with the video game. The game, titled Cyberkpunk 2077: Afterlife, will be released some time in 2020, it is unclear if it will be released with the game, before the game, or after the game.
Cyberpunk 2077: Afterlife game description states that, “players become Fixers. Fixers are the databrokers and masterminds in Night City who recruit cyberpunks, equip them with gear, and send them out on missions. But nothing’s free in Night City. Players need to balance between what they want and what they can actually afford. Using an innovative drafting mechanic and special dashboard, players must decide which cards they want to buy, and which to sacrifice for funds in order to purchase new ones.”
This means that the cards act as a means of equipment, and that the game acts as a tabletop game with cards instead of abilities. The game also has a street cred mechanic, there is no physical currency, only reputation, the more missions the player completes, the higher their reputation and the more street cred the player earns, thus allowing the player to purchase better equipment.
For those who don’t know, Cyberpunk 2077 is a sci-fi RPG that takes place in the future in a city called Night City, in California. The state is controlled by corporations and is essentially a lawless zone, as neither the state or the country is able to rein it in. Both homelessness and and bodily modifications are rampant in the city and the player is no different. The game has the player play as a mercenary V, and allows for a very open character customization, unlike CD Projekt Red’s previous game series The Witcher. The game allows the player to decide the character’s gender, hairstyle, bodily modifications, origin, and sexual orientation. The game will also feature legendary actor Keanu Reeves. The E3 Live Demo showed off the numerous feautures of the game and showed how there are so many different ways to complete a single mission based on how the player decides to build their character.
The game has several stat categories: Strength, Constitution, Intelligence, Reflex, Tech, and Cool. Each of these stats are upgradable depending on how the player decides to build their character’s stats. The game also has several combat options, allowing players to fight with guns, blades, and a number of other weapons. All of these little things will affect NPC behavior and change the way you interact with others.
Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release on April 16, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. The card game Cyberpunk 2077: Afterlife is set to release some time during that year as well.
