Cuphead Developers Tease at Possibility of a Sequel

StudioMDHR’s Cuphead has done impressively well over the last couple of months of its release. It’s vintage-era cartoon aesthetic, packed with its difficulty, has charmed many. In an interview conducted by IGN, the Moldenhauer brothers chatted about how they “guarantee you’ll see Cuphead again at some point.”

“As far as what our plans are for what we’re distinctly doing next, there’s been zero time to really breathe or think,” continue Jared.

“We might have had two thirty-minute chats about the future,” adds Chad. As the brother have said, even though there has been almost no time to really start working on the sequel, the possibility of a sequel will be a hot topic question for the duo for the coming months. At the very least, they do guarantee another Cuphead title, but whether or not it will be the next game developed by StudioMDHR is still up in the air.

Cuphead gained traction after the alluring art direction displayed at E3. The brothers, having quit their jobs and re-mortgaged their home to continue working on the game, had developed the game over the course of four years, and even ended up rebuilding the game from the ground up to turn it into the platformer it is now. Their diligence and creativity ended up as worthwhile risk in the end, for the title surpassed one million total sales within its first couple of weeks after launch. With the overall overwhelming positivity towards the game, and the heavy sales numbers, the words of the Moldenhauer have true weight to them.

However, when questioned if the developers had experienced burnout after having developed the title for years on end, Jared responded jokingly, saying “I did promise a long time ago: Cuphead Horse Racer 2 in an interview,” to which Chad also said, “maybe we have to live up to that.” Whether it be an April fools joke, future DLC, or a joke within the next Cuphead title, horse racing is sure to get players to pony up their money for the experience.

Cuphead is available on Steam, the Xbox One marketplace, and Best Buy for $20.
