In a recent blog post, Crytek has made an interesting announcement for a future collaboration project. The creators of the Crysis series announced in the post that they have teamed up with Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, and Improbable, to deliver to developers their Cryengine and other gaming technologies. They state that “Crytek is committed to making solutions available to its developers that allow them to create unique interactive experiences, while respecting their freedom of choice of tools and services.”
We remain committed to providing the best tools and technology for #gamedev and #indiedev. Today we reaffirm our stance with a partnership with @Improbableio; we will collaborate on a @cryengine integration for SpatialOS and a new AAA game: https://t.co/1Vhxg8Kfz7 pic.twitter.com/DXpy33by8Z

So what does this all mean exactly? Crytek partnering with Improbable will lead to the teams making a “fully-featured SpatialOS Game Development Kit for Cryengine” in upcoming games. The use of Improbable’s SpatialOS has already begun with the development of the 1,000 person battle royale that is on its way, Mavericks: Proving Ground, which we have previously covered. The game is still reaching out to individuals to become founders for the game’s development and offer exclusive early access. This somewhat surprising joining of forces has brought together studios that have a goal of providing high-quality games and “making statements” that their community members can rely upon. Crytek has also been busy with another battle royale type of game, Hunt: Showdown. Check out our latest article on that title’s second map here.
The Crytek team is attempting to become the start of something bigger in the world of interactive gaming by not limiting themselves and reaching out or partnering with numerous “technologists, tool makers, and developer services” to take the next step in the industry. What was left unsaid until the end of the blog post was the announcement that Crytek and Improbable are working on a new AAA game together. It is being created using both Cryengine and SpatialOS. There are no details on what this game is called or what it entails, but they promise that more will be revealed about the project soon.
