Publisher Kalypso and developer Claymore Game Studios announced that their real-time tactics stealth game Commandos: Origins will be launching for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on April 9th. A physical edition is being prepared for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions and will be sold on May 22. Gematsu reports that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox one version have also been announced and will be made available at a later date this year.
The setting ranges in Commandos: Origins from the Arctics to Africa, including Western Europe and the Eastern front. You’ll assume the role of six esteemed commandos; Jack O’Hara “the Green Beret”, Thomas “the Sapper” Hancock, Francis T. “the Sniper” Woolridge, Samuel “the Driver” Brooklyn, James “the Marine” Blackwood, and Rene “the Spy” Duchamp. The game features 10 missions in historically accurate World War II environments and features co-operative multiplayer in online and local split-screen.
Gamereactor interviewed Gregor Von Frankenberg, Level Designer at Claymore Game Studios and asked him about the Commando: Origin’s replayability, he had this to say “Basically all the maps are inspired by real historic World War II events. The historic commando’s missions, we have tried to design them so that you can approach them in either the lethal way or on the direct route..” and went on to say “..You can go the sneaky route and use the commando’s abilities like you are used to. That was our goal, to really push the sandbox feeling for commandos that you can use and combine the abilities of them. So you can work your way through the enemy lines, get behind them and get the feeling of, ‘okay, I’m moving through them being unseen’ and get to the objectives.”
Commando: Origins features extra content for the deluxe editions on all platforms and for the physical standard editions. This content will include six iconic Commando skins from Commandos 2 adapted for Commandos: Origins, a 3D printing template for the Green Beret, a digital Commandos: Origins calendar, and the original soundtrack with 15 symphonic tracks. The developer has gone to great lengths to create something inclusive for newcomers and series veterans, it might be the right direction for the series relying on its successes while looking forward.
