After being announced at E3 2019, and being delayed to 2021, Chivalry 2 finally has a release date. This announcement was made earlier today at the Epic Games Store Spring Showcase and more details were given in a recent blog post by the developers, Torn Banner Studios. This is the much-awaited sequel to the original Chivalry.
The original medieval combat FPS, Chivalry, came out over eight years ago in 2012. However, it is not the typical FPS, as players will be equipped with weapons indicative of the middle ages, such as maces, shields, and longbows. While not too much is known about Chivalry 2, the core gameplay will be similar to its predecessor, but it will have more movements, better controls, as well as new additions to the game. The lead environmental artist, James Arkwright, spoke on some of the changes to come to the successor. One of the most important, especially to new players, is the change in combat mechanics to make them more “accessible without losing any of the complexity.” War has also been scaled up to include 64 players to replicate the massive and chaotic feel of war.
During March 26-29, Chivalry 2 will enter a closed beta that is open to those who pre-order the game along with an exclusive Royal Zweihänder weapon skin. If that sounds interesting right now, the standard edition is $39.99 and the special edition is $49.99 which includes exclusive in-game content including “the Agatha Jousting Knight Armor and Royal Broadsword, the Mason Jousting Knight Armor, the Gold Horseman’s Axe, the Roses novelty item, and more.” As of now, Chivalry 2 is expected to fully release exclusively on the Epic Store on June 8, 2021. However, a year later it will come to Steam. The pre-order is only available for the PC however for console players the full release will include compatibility for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. If you want to experience the original game, it is currently on sale for $4.99 until February 15 on Steam.
