Earlier this year we reported on CD Projekt, the parent company of CD Projekt Red, revealing that they had been hacked and suffered data breach as a result. The hackers apparently took some files that included the source code for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, along with some other unknown types of data that ended up being sold off for roughly $7 million. Now, the Cyberpunk 2077 developer/publisher has announced that amount of data taken was originally worse than they thought, as hackers might’ve obtained some potentially sensitive data on current and former employees. Even more intriguing is that the company decided to announce this right smack in the middle of Geoff Keighly’s Summer Game Fest.
The statement made by the company was still a bit vague but gave a little more insight into what could’ve been taken in the data breach. “We are not able to confirm the exact contents of the data in question, though we believe it may include current/former employee and contractor details in addition to data related to our games.” The company also mentioned that they will do “everything in their power” to protect their employees.
While this entire situation an extremely unfortunate situation, the interesting part of this story is the timing of the announcement. As we already mentioned, CD Projekt tweeted this right in the middle of the Summer Game Fest. This more than likely created a bit of a distraction for some people, albeit not for those who were glued to their screens as the show finally revealed the release date of the highly anticipated Elden Ring and other titles.
The troubles of CD Projekt and their development company CD Projekt Red have been well documented in these past several months. Along with this new tidbit of information, the most recent issue the company is facing is missing their expected Q1 Net profit, which fell staggering 65% and cost them more than $8.8 million in the process. On top of that, they still haven’t been able to bring Cyberpunk 2077 back to the PlayStation Store since Sony delisted back in December.
