CCP Games made its debut into the gaming industry with the MMO Eve Online in 2003 and the game still holds a large player base. Since then, CCP Games has attempted to make a FPS game to tie in with the Eve Online universe. CCP Games attempted to develop a PlayStation 3 exclusive Dust 514, and later Project Legion. Both games were cancelled. Though four years ago, CCP Games did announce a new FPS project going by Project Nova.
CCP Games did show off some gameplay with Project Nova in the terms of limited in scope PvP matches, which demonstrated the different player classes. CCP Games did state they aimed to expand the game from 6v6 matches to 16v16 while sustaining 60 fps. Project Nova did appear to be heading towards a full release with even entering alpha stage offering limited play testing.
Unfortunately, CCP Games added Project Nova to the list of games that have been put on hold indefinitely. In an earnings call with their parent company, Pearl Abyss, CCP Games confirmed the cancellation. Developers have taken to multiple forums, such as Reddit, to confirm the news. Project Nova was closed after a lackluster reception during the alpha testing stages, especially when compared to Dust 514, Project Nova was considered shallow and too limited in scope.
We’re continuing to develop our sci-fi multiplayer shooter game concept actively evolving it beyond the original scope for what was formerly codenamed Project Nova.
CCP Games is still attempting to make a FPS game with a shared universe with EVE Online despite all the cancellations. CCP Games is has stayed queit on details of the new project. With only a few reassurances from developers that CCP Games has not given up on the concept. “Development efforts on this concept are now the full focus of CCP’s London studio. Project Nova team members based in Iceland have been moved onto other projects at our Reykjavík studio.” CCP Games’ head of public relations, George Kellion said on Reddit. “It is very common for games in active development to evolve over time, often substantially. We remain committed to offering a rock-solid, action-oriented gameplay experience with stellar visuals, but due to significant changes in the scope and direction of our sci-fi multiplayer shooter game concept, it also made sense to update how we refer to this project internally.”
