Capcom Teases Big Plans for Resident Evil’s 20th Anniversary

While we know for sure that Resident Evil Umbrella Corps will be coming out on June 21st for PS4 and PC, it seems that Capcom has much more in store for the Resident Evil franchise.  In an Investor report, Capcom stated that the release of Umbrella Corps is a “warm-up to the full-scale offensive planned for the second half of the year.”

The “full-scale offensive” could mean a number of things.  We know that Capcom is producing a HD remake of Resident Evil 2, which will be in the same style as last years HD remake of Resident Evil.  There is also the announced re-releases of Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 for Xbox One and PS4.  Resident Evil 6 is already out, with Resident Evil 5 coming in summer and Resident Evil 4 in fall.  We’ve heard that news of Resident Evil 7 will be coming soon and that the game will go back to the series’ roots, but nothing else so far.  Right now the only game that has a confirmed release date is the multiplayer shooter Resident Evil Umbrella Corps.

March 2016 marked the 20th anniversary of the Resident Evil series, and it looks like Capcom has big plans for the franchise.  The Investor Report also said that the “full-scale offensive” will go until the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017.  If there are plans for Resident Evil 7 next year, it’s possible Capcom is delaying the game to release alongside the NX.  We’re sure to get more details of Capcom’s plan during E3 this year.

Even though there hasn’t been a numbered Resident Evil game in 3 year, the series has remained alive through some great spin-off games.  Resident Evil Revelations and Revelations 2 were highly praised for going back to the series horror roots, something that might have been intentional after the complaints that Resident Evil 6 was too focused on action.  The Investor Report also said that Resident Evil 0 HD Remastered “steadily increased unit sales.”   It’s clear Resident Evil fans are still yearning for a great survival horror experience, and hopefully we’ll see something like that later this year.
