A new take on Call of Duty‘s popular Zombies mode, along with a special PlayStation 4 bundle, hits stores in November when Call of Duty: WWII launches.
Details for the mode and limited edition bundle, which releases Nov. 3, were announced earlier today through the PlayStation Blog and PlayStation Twitter account. The upcoming title returns to the 1940s, which the series has not explored since 2008’s World at War.
Sledgehammer Games is in charge of this entry, the same developer for CoD: Infinite Warfare and co-developed CoD: Modern Warfare 3 with Infinity Ward. Two of Sledgehammer Games’ founders, Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, worked on the original Dead Space, which Schofield created. This history with the survival horror genre plays into the studio’s new version of Zombies.
Jon Horsley, the lead for CoD: WWII‘s Zombies, told the PlayStation Blog that “[the studio’s] goal was to make this the most terrifying Zombies experience we’ve ever created.” The co-op mode takes place in a Bavarian village featuring blood-drenched sewers and a laboratory where a mad scientist reanimates the dead.
Some of the enemy variety includes zombies on fire, others that are sprinters and a particularly gruesome fiend sporting a head cage. These zombies, which are the Third Reich’s creations, “retain some of the discipline and purpose of the soldiers they once were” and require strong strategizing and teamwork to defeat, according to Horsley.
Other features include weapon upgrades, some type of perk system (which Horsley only mentioned as just “rewards and upgrades” that will be familiar to experienced players) and usable environmental pieces such as saws and traps.
The other announcement of the day introduced a special edition PS4 bundle, which includes a khaki green DualShock 4, camouflaged 1TB PS4 and standard edition of the game for $299.99. A closer look at the console’s army-themed shell reveals the design incorporates DualShock 4 silhouettes.
Social media reaction to the console’s design criticized Sony for using a design that users felt was generic, ugly and even told Sony to fire the designer. A previous special edition bundle for CoD: Black Ops III was mentioned and praised for its design over the upcoming limited release. Others are fine with the design, citing the camo’s controller motif as ‘clever.’ Most replies went along with joke, stating the console was camouflaged with the image background.
There is no word of a CoD: WWII bundle for Xbox One yet. The bundle can be preordered here. Call of Duty: WWII launches Nov. 3 for PS4, PC and Xbox One at $59.99.
