After being teased throughout most of the previous week, Activision and Treyarch have officially revealed that the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise will indeed take place during the Cold War. Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War is the official name and will apparently be inspired by real-life events that took place during the high tension era that ran from the late 1940s all the way up to the early 1990s. In addition, a teaser trailer was uploaded that shows real people and incidents that were fairly active during the Cold War, including KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov with this famous warning to America in 1984.
Alongside these reels are brief snippets of text that play with Bezmenov’s speech which mention’s a Soviet spy with the code name of “Perseus” who was able to infiltrate the U.S. What follows is a clutter of images, videos, and random words/messages that might hint at the main campaign’s storyline. One thing is for sure, this teaser video only begs more questions as to actual answers, especially since it doesn’t show any actual gameplay at all. Don’t worry about that though, at the end of the trailer it states that the game is set for a worldwide reveal on August 26.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a whole lot more to go on here. There’s a slight possibility that the battle royale mode Warzone in the 2019 iteration of Modern Warfare has some more hints, as Activision stated earlier this month that it will in fact be part of future titles in the franchise. They’ve connected the storyline from that game’s campaign mode into Warzone already, so it might not be such a stretch to see them do it here as well.
Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War will be jointly developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, which is something that we learned over a year ago when Activision decided to remove Sledgehammer from the equation and make Treyarch the lead developer instead. Usually this time of the year we’d already know when the game will come out, and it’s normally near the end of the year. However, with the worldwide effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic that might not happen this time. Although knowing how many hours Treyarch put into Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, we also wouldn’t be surprised if it makes it to the 2020 holiday season either.
Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War’s worldwide reveal is set for August 26. Hopefully, we will learn if the title will be either a cross-generation game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, or just be made directly for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
