Call of Duty Black Ops 3 Arriving This Year

Yes, it’s that time of the year when Activision starts trickling in details of the latest Call of Duty game. With the publisher having established that three studios, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games and Treyarch will be rotating at making a CoD game every year, it’s now Treyarch’s turn, and to nobody’s surprise, they’re working on Black Ops 3.

The news was gradually introduced via an announcement trailer filled with cryptic dialogue, abstract visuals and a worldwide reveal date of April 26:

Afterwards, Treyarch tweeted that “It feels good to be back,” and “it feels even better to be #BackInBlack. Let’s do this.” Finally, for even the most skeptical, Activision tweeted their own confirmation: “It’s official–@CallofDuty Black Ops II is coming this year from @Treyarch”

Although an official reveal is scheduled later this month, the source code for the Call of Duty website has been found to contain many details of Blops 3, none of which sound terribly original:

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is the first title for next-gen hardware in the critically acclaimed Black Ops series. Developed by Treyarch, the award-winning creator of the two most-played games in Call of Duty history. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 deploys players into a dark, twisted future where a new breed of Black Ops soldier emerges and the lines are blurred between our own humanity and the technology we created to stay ahead, in a world where cutting-edge military robotics define warfare. With three unique game modes: Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies, providing fans with the deepest and most ambitious Call of Duty ever.

The previous game in the series, Advanced Warfare, freshened up the aging Cod formula somewhat by introducing exosuits, so it’ll be interesting to see what Treyarch will come up with to extend the longevity of the franchise.

Kerwin Tsang: Kerwin has been a gamer for almost as long as he's been alive, ever since he received a Sega Mega Drive in 1989. Having graduated to the upper echelons of PC gaming, he now boasts a number of major gaming accomplishments. These include getting through all three Deus Ex games without killing anyone, clocking in over 700 hours of gameplay time in Skyrim without ever finishing the main story, and nearly shattering every bone in his hand from punching the wall when his soldiers in XCOM missed a shot with 95% chance to hit.
