California Lawmakers Believe Playing Pokemon Go While Driving Should Be Banned

For a while, there has been a ban on texting while driving in California. With Pokemon Go becoming the biggest mobile application on the market, so many people play it in their homes, walking, in cars, and even while driving. Playing a game while driving is more dangerous than texting while driving so California lawmakers want to spread the ban of texting to also playing Pokemon Go. This week a bill was sent to governor Jerry Brown to outline these new measures. So in order for the bills to become more current GameSpot says that “the bill would ban using a handheld device in any way that distracts the driver.” Which would establish a good ban that will last for a long time on banning any new mobile games.

By instating “the [new] bill [will] also plug a loophole that has made it difficult for law enforcement to enforce existing laws. In 2014, the California Court of Appeal ruled that the existing ban only prohibits a driver from holding a wireless telephone while talking on it.” This law will be able to cut out the gray area in the phone usage ban allowing police to rightfully enforce the law so that the public could be safe.

The main goal of Pokemon Go is to get their users out into the real world, but putting users behind the wheel while playing is not a wise thing. Pokemon Go has always warned its users to be aware of their surroundings, and one recent update introduced a prompt when surpassing a certain speed to have users confirm that they are a passenger and not the driver. However, just by clicking the simple confirmation one could still be driving while playing.
