ByuN Claims First-Ever Teamless Win in GSL

Earlier today, Hyun Woo “ByeN” won the GSL (Global StarCraft League) Code S tournament in South Korea. Widely considered the most competitive tournament in the world for Starcraft 2, ByuN made history in the tournament by becoming the first teamless player to beat out all competitors in the grand finals of the major event, according to Dailydot.

Woo took home just under $35,000 for his Season 2 winnings. But his journey to the top of the tournament wasn’t an easy one. ByuN was tested throughout his historic run. Early on in the group stage elimination, he narrowly escaped elimination, advancing to the playoffs once overcoming his initial group stage stumble. The competition only got more difficult as the 23 year old faced fellow Terran veteran Kim “Ryung” Dong Won in the quarterfinals. The two faced off in a five-game series, where ByuN came out on top the grueling series. ByuN then faced off against Baek “Dear” Dong Jun in a match that earned him a decisive victory. ByuN afterwards called this victory the “happiest day in my career”. After defeating “Dear” Dong Jun, Woo advanced to the grand final with the teamless Terran.

In the finale, ByuN faced his toughest opponent yet: the third highest earner in all of StarCraft 2, Kim “sOs” Yoo Hin. In the first match, sOs won, using his technologically advanced Protoss while ByuN used his space marine Terrans. However, ByuN was able to keep his composure and his speed eventually left sOs unable to regain his footing for the remainder of the series. What turned out to be a lopsided upset, ByuN outclassed the reigning champion, marking this the first time in both Premier Korean League’s StarCraft and StarCraft II that a teamless force won the event.

ByuN now will set his sights on the World Championship Series at Blizzcon this fall (November 4-5), where he will attempt to continue to dominate his competition.
