The recent passing of beloved actor Lance Reddick last Friday, March 17th, came as a shock to everyone. Reddick was not only known for his appearance in the John Wick films and other on-screen movies and shows but lent his voice as the iconic Commander Zavala in Destiny. Today Bungie has sent out a tribute honoring his legacy and have also confirmed that there are still final performances from the actor in the game to come. Bungie stated in their tribute that, “For nearly a decade, Guardians around the world have found purpose and comfort in Zavala’s presence, bolstered by that unmistakable voice, so full of strength, serenity, and nobility.”
“For now, we will honor his presence through his performances yet to come in the game, and in the memories that will last us a lifetime. We are deeply saddened by his passing but so thankful for the time we spent together, and our thoughts are with his friends and loved ones.”
It’s currently unclear what these performances will be for, whether it will be any dialogue at the end of the current in-game Destiny 2 Season of Defiance or something larger in future game content. His most recent appearance in Destiny 2 came from the recently released Lightfall expansion.
After news of his passing last Friday, Guardians— Destiny players as they’re referred to— gathered around Commander Zavala at the Tower, many giving emotes of salute, kneeling, sending out candles. Reddick’s voice for Commander Zavala is the most iconic in the game, and has always given players a sense of determination and comfort. For those who log onto Destiny 2 will now see a tribute message pop up honoring him.
Reddick also lent his voice as Sylens in both Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. Earlier this week Guerrilla Games teased a video for the upcoming Burning Shores expansion which also features Reddick’s voice.
