According to a recent job listing, Bungie, the developer behind Destiny, is breaking ground into evolving its internal game engine to support mobile platforms. The listing position asks for a “Senior Mobile Platforms Engineer,” further cementing the implications made by other job listings posted late last year. One of the job listings from last September directly mentioned the need for an Art Director with the experience of “at least one AAA or large mobile title.”
The Senior Mobile Platforms Engineer opening further outlines that Bungie will “extend the technology that our games rely on to reach players on iOS and Android mobile platforms.” There is no word whether the game in question could be to extend the reach of Destiny 2 or to work on the new IP that Bungie design director Jacob Benton confirmed in the beginning of April via an interview on Japanese outlet 4Gamer. This new IP is locked in to come in the year 2025. Directly correlated to this, an Incubation Gameplay Engineering Lead listing asks “would you like to work on a new IP at Bungie…” Experience for this position also says that nice-to-have skills include experience with a variety of game engines including mobile. This evidence points to the mobile engine specifically supporting a new IP, but this is speculation based on the job listings.
Besides the September listing for an Art Director, an Executive Producer and Senior Test Manager was included, again requiring the individual to have experience in the large mobile game space. These listings have since been removed. The Art Director position, which is still available states that he/she “will work with both an internal team and external partners to ensure we are making a great Destiny experience for players, optimized for platform and market territories and upholding the Destiny IP pillars and brand.” More recently in March, Bungie had also put out a listing for a Creative Director to “define the vision and features for a new 3rd-person action game”.
All of these job postings begin to map the budding anticipation for a yet-to-be-announced mobile game title that appears to not yet be under development. There is no way to know for sure what Bungie has in store, but players will have to wait for Bungie to release official announcements in the future.
