BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony Recap: StarCraft Returns, Diablo V Announced, Overwatch News, and More

BlizzCon is back after 3 years, and it’s bigger than ever. And with the opening ceremony come and gone, we got an insane amount of updates, news, and reveals, including upcoming heroes, new updates for games, and the return of a beloved franchise. This is everything revealed at the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony.

Heroes of the Storm is back after a six-year hiatus, with many losing hope that the game would ever receive any new content. BlizzCon 2026 surprises everyone with the reveal of its next hero. Xal’atath is the next upcoming hero, and she is a ranged assassin. With her comes the next major update for the game, set to release on September 28 and available on PTR on September 14. Along with it is the spark that has been lit by the players who refused to quit the game, as this isn’t the end. As even more heroes are to come, so congrats, fans of Heroes of the Storm.

StarCraft is back, which is insane to say in the big 2026, but a new game is now in development at Blizzard. Though the game is quite far out, as it’s set for a spring 2030 release, it’s an open-world shooter led by ex-Far Cry producer Dan Hay. As he is set to “re-ignite” the franchise with his new team, not much else is known, so we’ll have to watch Blizzard for more in the coming years.

On top of the game announcements, we got a collaboration between Diablo and Netflix, as a new anime is in development at Netflix. This marks the beginning for the universes at Blizzard, as they want to bring their stories beyond gaming and onto new screens. Not much is known about what the anime will look like; more details will be shared in the future. As mentioned before, this is only the beginning, and Blizzard has teased that their other worlds are in talks to receive this treatment.

Overwatch got some major reveals at the opening ceremony, as the new hero was officially shown off, and he’s looking steezy. Doctrine is the new Season 5 hero to join the roster, and he’s a life-draining, vampire-inspired Support Hero with his own bat-like drones. If you’re interested in him, you can try him out now as he’s available in-game for only a limited time, and along with that, if you play one game, you can get a free Mythic Voucher as a thanks from BlizzCon. Along with the new character reveal, they announced the next set of hero reworks to come, as Sombra and Roadhog are to be re-reworked, and they teased that Sombra is now a support, which is interesting, along with Season 5 marking the conclusion of The Reign of Talon, bringing the first year-long narrative arc in Overwatch history. They also teased the future of Overwatch as the next Overwatch Spotlight is coming in February 2027, and in their words, the return of “Peak Overwatch” 6v6, maybe?

Diablo V is now in the works at Blizzard as a new age of darkness is taking shape. Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won, setting up an all-new brutal chapter for the series where the question is asked: “What must you become when the world has already fallen?” Diablo V is set to release in Spring 2029, marking the next chapter in the series.

Along with the reveal of new Diablo, Blizzard is celebrating 30 Years of Diablo with Diablo IV’s Season of Hell’s Legacy, which brings back the Prime Evils, including the Lord of Terror himself, on September 15. Along with Deckard Cain, anniversary rewards, and gear inspired by every era of Diablo, the future of the game was revealed, as the first half of 2027 will feature a first-class pack that brings the return of the javelin-wielding Amazon. Blizzard also announced that Diablo IV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15, along with the Season of Hell’s Legacy. And those at home can now experience the return of an infamous evil: the udderly malevolent Moophisto.

Hearthstone receives a whole new update as the overhauled Journal ties each expansion together with a narrative wrapper, bringing all the quests, achievements, and events we’ve been through together in one place. Along with that, the next update is set for October 20: Reign of the Black Empire takes players back to Azeroth, where the Old Gods were at their most powerful. The expansion introduces a new keyword assemble, merging two cards into a powerful new one. This allows for wildly unpredictable combinations. On September 22, an all-new minion type called Aberrations joins the battleground, influenced by the Old Gods. And in March 2027, players will be receiving a new player class after 6 years. The Monk joins the fray, bringing its signature fluid playstyle and adaptable nature to the Tavern.

WarCraft is the final game to get shown off, as we got lots of news for the future of the multiple Warcraft titles. Warcraft III Reforged is officially receiving a new story after 23 years. The new Forsaken Kingdom campaign takes us back to the fall of Lordaeron and its transformation into the Undercity. Along with it comes the 3.0 update for WarCraft III Reforged, featuring a massive graphics update, a revamped World Editor, and more. And a surprise for players is now available. At the midpoint of The Worldsoul Saga in the Midnight expansion, World of Warcraft’s next major update, Eclipse (12.2), sees Xal’atath drawing ever closer to her goal. Along with a tease of the final installment in The Worldsoul Saga, The Last Titan stands to be the culmination of over two decades of Warcraft. More information about The Last Titan will be revealed in early next year.

World of Warcraft: Forever is the new third World of Warcraft experience alongside Modern and Classic. It brings new paths and new areas to explore that have been unseen during the vanilla era, three new zones, over 1,00 quests, nine new dungeons, two new raids, the new Skyborne race, and more. World of Warcraft: Forever launches November 4, 2026, and a beta starts September 17.
