For Blizzard, this is the year of Diablo’s resurgence. Just in time for the anticipated launch of Diablo 3: Eternal Collection on the Nintendo Switch, Blizzard has finally unveiled the rumored amiibo associated with the port. The Loot Goblin, or Treasure Goblin, from Diablo 3, is a small creature that periodically appears in the game, carrying a variety of items of differing rarity on its back.
In a tweet by the official Diablo account, Blizzard announced that the Loot Goblin will be the representative mascot of the game’s Nintendo Switch edition, a tantalizing exclusive merchandise that pairs well with the Switch-only, in-game items marketed by the company for the game’s re-release. Along with the reveal is the pre-order link for the figure, as the elusive treasure-carrying goblin will not be available until December of this year.

Unlike the Solaire of Astora amiibo that launched with the Switch port of Dark Souls, the Loot Goblin amiibo is not a realistic sculpt of the actual in-game model. The design of the figure is a simplified version that attempts to capture a more cute and appealing aspect of these creatures. A similar design can be found in Blizzard’s own “Cute But Deadly” Diablo vinyl figurine series, just with a different paint job.
However, the amiibo has in-game functionalities, much like its other counterparts in the Nintendo compendium. While the specifics of the mechanics are not yet revealed, it can be assumed that the figure will be able to generate certain items, as Blizzard describes its ability to “summon your own portal to untold riches.”
2018 is shaping up to be a big year for Diablo. With expected news coming out of Blizzcon tomorrow and a renewed partnership with Nintendo, Blizzard has successfully revitalized the dormant series and brought it into the modern era.
Diablo 3: Eternal Collection arrives on the Nintendo Switch tomorrow, November 2.
