BlizzCon 2018, the annual celebration for everything Blizzard Entertainment, is just two weeks away as the anticipation has been building rapidly the past few months. The Diablo franchise in particular is generating an insane amount of hype, especially with the rumors of a brand new entry into the series that may be announced at the convention. Blizzard can see this coming from mile away, and as they did last year, made a blog post in regards to the franchise heading into BlizzCon 2018.
The blog post itself is fairly ambiguous. However, a specific statement in the post does beg further elaboration. “These are very exciting times—we currently have multiple teams working on different Diablo projects and we can’t wait to tell you all about them . . . when the time is right,” Blizzard says in the post. “While we won’t be ready to announce all of our projects, we do intend to share some Diablo-related news with you at the show.” In essence, Blizzard is trying to quell some of the hype before the convention, which may lead to some of the fans’ biggest fear: there might not be a new Diablo game announced at BlizzCon 2018.
The company goes on to talk about the Diablo III Eternal Collection, which releases for the Nintendo Switch on the very first day of the convention, November 2, before thanking the fans for their patience. Blizzard’s developers are perfectionists, and if they think something isn’t ready to be shown to the public, then they won’t unveil it until they feel that the time is right. Some fans of the series might not appreciate extended development time, but if history is any indication, the wait will be worth it.
As for the projects they are ready to show us, it’s more than likely that it will be the Diablo Animated Netflix show which is all but confirmed at this point. Another possibility is the long awaited remaster of Diablo II, which has also been rumored for while now. StarCraft Remastered was considered a success for the company, so it would make sense to follow suit with another all time classic. Blizzard’s blog post is a giant “heads up” for what we can expect at the Opening Ceremony, and it’s a fair point to make, as the fans are probably a little too hyped over the potential new game. Maybe the company is just doing this to make the surprise announcement all the more exciting if it does happen. Either way, we won’t have to wait long to find out.
BlizzCon will take place in Anaheim, California, from Friday November 2 through Saturday November 3.
