Blizzard Reportedly Cancels a StarCraft FPS in Favor of Diablo and Overwatch Sequels

Blizzard has reportedly canceled a first person shooter set in the StarCraft universe.  According to multiple sources in contact with Kotaku, the reasoning behind this is reportedly due to the company shifting focus to developing sequels to the successful Diablo and Overwatch games.

According to Kotaku’s sources, the game was codenamed Ares and had been in development for the past two years. The game would have put players in the role of  a Terran marine as they fight against the alien species, and one of the major factions in StarCraft, Zerg. Apparently, there was work being done to make the Zerg playable in some way as well. Nothing else is currently known about what the game could have been.

This isn’t the first StarCraft shooter to be canceled by the company either. Back in the early 2000s, Blizzard was working on a third person shooter in the StarCraft universe titled StarCraft Ghost. However, due to tumultuous development, the game was eventually canceled in 2006.

Though they don’t “generally comment on unannounced projects,” Blizzard released a statement regarding the news. In the statement, the company discuss how there are always different projects in the works at the company. They would also give the reason as to why some of these projects are never announced, “the reason we tend not to discuss them publicly is because anything can happen over the course of development.” They would even express grief about when a project doesn’t go as planned.

Knowing that changes or disappointments can happen doesn’t make it any less painful when we have to shelve a project or when an announcement doesn’t go as planned.

Now that Ares is apparently canceled, the teams that were working on the game have allegedly been moved onto the development teams for Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. Reports first surfaced that Diablo 4 was in development last year after the company faced backlash due to ending BlizzCon by announcing the mobile game, Diablo: Immortal, instead of announcing Diablo 4 to which Blizzard has since denied. This is the first we’ve heard of Blizzard working on an Overwatch sequel so not much is currently known about the game, but, according to Kotaku, the game will feature “a large PVE element.”

Kotaku states that both Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 “will be key parts of Blizzard’s strategy in the years to come.” The games are also reportedly to make a big splash during BlizzCon this year. With BlizzCon happening in November, fans won’t have to wait too much longer to see if this news is correct or not.
