Despite being known as a video game publisher, Blizzard Entertainment does occasionally release short films set in the universe of Overwatch, expanding the hero shooter franchise. These short films are not a new addition to the game’s official world building. Since the original release in 2016, animated shorts have been used as a way to give more concrete context to Overwatch’s surrounding narrative.
Alongside the 2022 release of Overwatch 2, Blizzard did slow down the pace for the production of animated shorts, adapting to a more regulated publication schedule of about two short films per year. During 2026, however, as part of the rebrand that changed Overwatch 2 to just Overwatch, a total of five short films have been released so far, each one lining up with the rebranded season format.
The most recent of these films, titled In the Wolf’s Mouth (2026), effectively serves as the finale for the Reign of Talon story arc that began this past February. The first Reign of Talon film introduced “Vendetta, [who was] scorned by Talon’s actions after her father’s passing.” Eager to “make her move against Doomfist and claim her birthright,” Vendetta engaged in a fight for control over Talon against Doomfist.
Given this, it is only fitting for the fifth and final short to introduce one of Doomfist’s past acomplices via his futuristic technology. Some fans are quick to notice that the gauntlet used by Doomfist to secure victory over Vendetta was crafted by Doctrine, the newest addition to the support hero lineup in Overwatch.
And as the Reign of Talon comes to an end, a new beginning is on horizon. Stay tuned for even more in Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine today.
“Take her. She is yours.” states Doomfist, announcing his victory before warning the Strike team that “this will not end like before.” He once again alludes to Doctrine’s creations and lore, remarking that “Talon [the criminal organization] is about to become something new. Something more… fearsome” before exiting the scene.
