It has been a year and a half since Overwatch, the team-based first person shooter, has been released. Over this time span, fans have received multiple balance updates, new items, seasonal events, and many cinematic films and shorts to boot. After everything that Blizzard has treated the Overwatch community to, one has to wonder what they will do next. Although it will take time for more details, the wonder can be satiated for now because Blizzard has created job listing on their website for interns to help work on a new Overwatch project in 2018.
On Blizzard’s careers page, the specific job posting in question is a call for generalist artist interns. More specifically, Blizzard is looking for “an intern to help create a wide range of assets to help bring [the] game to life. [Interns] will work closely with our concept, environment and character teams to create hard surface and organic props, weapons and possibly characters that are both detail-oriented and consistent with the art style we’ve defined.” Under the recommended talents subsection of the listing, Blizzard wants interns with “knowledge and understanding of the Overwatch universe.” Although this posting was made just recently, fans will have to wait until later next year for the specifics. The internship groups are scheduled from May 2018 to August 2018, and June 2018 to September 2018, so we can expect to hear a more formal announcement and/or update either during or after the internships have concluded next year.
This listing has created quite the buzz on both NeoGAF and Reddit, and users have already begun theorizing that this upcoming game could be some sort of mobile game. Any theory is stretch with such little information, and there is no supporting evidence to confirm or deny these theories, but it is also not an entire impossibility. We can look at Blizzard and their experience with the mobile gaming community. In 2015, they entered into the mobile market by releasing Hearthstone, a World of Warcraft inspired trading card game, on app stores supported by iOS, Android, and smart tablets.
Overall, 2018 is already looking exciting and promising for the Overwatch community.
