Black Future ’88 Is A Cyberpunk Roguelike That Is Coming To Steam

Black Future ’88 is an upcoming roguelike that comes equipped with 2d animation, a cyberpunk aesthetic, and a synth-punk soundtrack. Players will climb vertically through a procedural tower that is constantly evolving, and reach the top before their heart explodes.

The key to survival comes with slashing, dashing, and shooting to survive against the tirades of Colossal Wardens and the Homicidal AI. The setting revolves around a fictitious version of 1988, and has all the style to prove it. Players can choose to equip laser beams or fog machines to fight with, alongside 50 other unique weapons. Each has their own specific effect, so it’s safe to say at least a few of them will feel just right according to each individual’s preferred playstyle.

The unique setting is paired with an interesting plot regarding a world left devastated by a nuclear cataclysm. The event was caused by the tower architect who dropped bombs around the city until the skies had completely blacked out the sun. This made it so time was difficult to tell, and otherwise dismissed, therefore, the locals claim it has been 1988 ever since. Extreme floods follow the bombings, and make any hope for salvation appear incredibly grim. The game begins after all of this has occurred, and paints the devastation responsible for why your protagonist is attempting to leave. Players must evolve to survive, as even their own hearts are wired to kill them. Various bosses must be defeated, wits can be tested through multiplayer, and players must curse themselves with buffs along the way.

Black Future ’88 does not currently have a release date, but the developers at SUPERSCARYSNAKES believe it will be out sometime this year. Those interested can head over to their website and sign up to be notified when the demo comes out.
