BioWare, the developers behind such groundbreaking action RPGs as the Mass Effect series, is reportedly working on a new project codenamed Dylan. It appears not to be an advancaded Bob Dylan simulator, but instead an MMO-light game in the style of Destiny and The Division, which is making some fans worried about the direction Bio Ware is taking. BioWare Edmonton, the developers behind the original Mass Effect trilogy, have been working on this new IP for over four years. It was first introduced back at E3 2014, but only the vaguest details were shared at the time.
According to a recent report on ibtimes.co.uk, this project will get an official reveal at E3 2017. The news originally comes from Liam “Unseen64” Robertson’s most recent Patreon podcast, which he says he is “100% sure”about:
This is a project that’s been in development for around four years, it’s currently set to be revealed at E3 2017… I don’t know if they’ve said this publicly, it’s set to come out next year.
During the same podcast, Robertson claims that Knights of the Old Republic is being revived by BioWare Austin. While many fans are no doubt aching for a sequel to the critically-acclaimed Star Wars RPG, there’s been some conflicting news that this is nothing but a rumor. Kotaku news editor Jason Schreier tweeted earlier today that this was “old info and BioWare Austin is mostly on the new IP.” Whether or not this new revelation takes away any of the credibility from Robertson’s claims on Dylan has yet to be seen.
The news that BioWare is taking notes from Destiny and The Division might makes some gamers very cautious about buying this new game, as both those games have meet with mixed reviews from critics and gamers alike. Criticism for Destiny was mostly centered on the storyline and post-campaign content, while players of The Division constantly complained about the tedious grinding in the game. Hopefully, BioWare will be able to draw upon their decades of development knowledge to once again make a truly great game.
EA’s E3 press conference this year will take place Saturday, June 10th.
