In an open letter posted on Bioware’s website, General Manager Aaryn Flynn announced that he would be leaving the company.
Flynn has been with Bioware since 2000 and has worked on some of the studio’s most beloved games such as Jade Empire and Dragon Age: Inquisition but said that he had “been contemplating changes in my own life for some time.” Despite his departure he seemed thankful, saying that he was “privileged to get a chance to join a group of people working on the coolest, most creative things I could imagine.”
Flynn’s departure comes four months after Bioware found itself in a difficult position with fans when the long anticipated Mass Effect: Andromeda shipped with issues such as broken facial animations, character rigging glitches, and lackluster character customization system. These problems led many to doubt whether the studio was up to the task of creating a shared-world experience when it announced Anthem during this year’s E3.
Yet this wasn’t the only news to come out of Bioware today. Replacing Flynn is none other than Casey Hudson, who will be returning to Bioware after leaving the company three years ago. In separate announcement Hudson said that after a “transformative” few years away that he is “thrilled to have the opportunity to return to lead BioWare – a studio that I think of as home.”
Hudson has worked on some of Bioware’s fan-favorite games including serving as Project Director on the Mass Effect trilogy and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic but in his time away became the Creative Director at Microsoft Studios.
Flynn is set to step down at the end of this month at which point Hudson will take over. In the meantime Flynn has said that he “will be working with [Hudson] over the next couple of weeks to help catch him up.” Hudson also wished Flynn the best, saying he would “miss his presence at the studio.”
In closing, Hudson said that “BioWare continues to hold a special magic – full of profoundly talented people, and an inspiring creative energy. When I look at the stunning progress Aaryn and the team has made with Anthem, and the other projects in the works, I truly believe our best is yet to come.”
