Bioware Studio GM Delivers Mid-Summer Update, Discussing Anthem’s Shared-World Story

Bioware’s Studio General Manager, Casey Hudson, recently posted mid-summer update to the company’s blog. In it, Hudson discussed a number of items concerning the studio, including some information about its upcoming title Anthem. Following EA PLAY, Hudson addressed one question in particular: “how can there be agency of your story in a living world that you share with friends?”

Hudson answered with a brief statement on how Anthem will handle its changing world. “Our solution to this design challenge is one of the most innovative things about Anthem,” Hudson wrote. There are two distinct parts of Anthem, called ‘Our World, My Story.’

“In the dynamic open world, everything is experienced in real-time by all Anthem players – day/night, weather, and world-scale events that shape the ongoing narrative of the setting. This is ‘our world,’ which we share as a player community,” Hudson added. “Then when you return to Fort Tarsis, that’s actually a single-player experience, and it’s where you spend time developing relationships, making choices, and seeing consequences. That’s the ‘my story’ part.”

Although that’s all Hudson wrote about Anthem‘s narrative in this particular update, he acknowledged that fans would have many more questions. Bioware will once again address ‘Our World, My Story’ at PAX, where Hudson promised that they would have the chance to “really go deep” on the subject. Naturally, Bioware will answer other burning questions about Anthem at this panel as well.

Other Bioware IPs were mentioned in the summer update; Hudson reassured fans that the developer does “hear loud and clear the interest in BioWare doing more Dragon Age and Mass Effect.” According to the update, Bioware has “some teams hidden away working on some secret stuff,” although it isn’t quite ready to be discussed yet. It looks like fans of both franchises will have to wait a while longer for developments in those areas.

Anthem releases on February 22, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Glenn Carreau: Hi! I'm Glenn: recent college grad specializing in interactive arts and media, writer, game creator and connoisseur, pop culture junkie, and semi-professional fan-artist and blogger. In my free time, I function as an unnecessarily specific gaming encyclopedia. I also play the violin, binge crime/detective procedural shows (still not sure why), and do a large amount of digital painting. I'm probably too attached to Dragon Age, but not really inclined to do anything about it. I'm a huge fan of cosplay, foxes, the prose of Jenny Lawson, and Strong Female Characters™.
