Bethesda’s DEATHLOOP Will Be A PS5 and PC Exclusive

Sony’s “Future of Gaming” event showcased a lot of flashy new games, but there was a lot to breakdown.  DEATHLOOP is an upcoming first-person shooter from Bethesda, created by Dishonored developer Arkane Studios.  Here is the official description of the game from Bethesda:

DEATHLOOP is an innovative first-person shooter launching exclusively for PlayStation 5 and PC from Arkane Lyon, the award-winning studio behind the critically acclaimed Dishonored franchise. DEATHLOOP will continue Arkane’s signature gameplay design, challenging gamers to play their own way.

As Colt, players are trapped in a time loop on the enigmatic island of Blackreef, doomed to repeat the same day for eternity. The only chance for escape is to break the loop by assassinating eight key targets before the day resets. However, lurking in the shadows is rival assassin Julianna, equipped with her own equally powerful abilities and weapons, on a mission to protect the loop by assassinating Colt, and restarting the cycle. DEATHLOOP is launching Holiday 2020.

Bethesda hasn’t exactly been riding high since the release of the much-criticized Fallout 76, but games like DEATHLOOP show a potential course correction for the studio.  Bethesda has almost always done single-player story-based games well, and DEATHLOOP certainly offers an interesting premise, but it will be important to see how the plot exactly unfolds, as the description makes the game sound as if it could potentially become repetitive.

The game also features a stylized art style that is very flat, which is cool, but doesn’t exactly show off the capabilities of the PS5, or flatter itself visually.  Perhaps some of the footage I the trailer is from an earlier build, but not much about it screams “next-gen.”  DEATHLOOP looks to be interesting, but it is likely to be somewhat niche, at least until we find out more about the game in the coming months.
