With VR systems on the up-and-up, the latest buzz is focused on the Oculus Quest. The latest upcoming VR system from big-name Oculus is slated for release in Spring of 2019 and has added yet another VR fan-favorite to their growing list of launch titles, including Vader Immortal, Moss, and The Climb. Beat Saber has been recently announced as a launch title for the Quest. You can check out the announcement trailer below.
Beat Saber has become a smash hit since its initial Early Access release in May of 2018. The game recently hit one million copies sold, and for good reason. Combining the rhythm and musical components of games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band with dual lightsabers within the world of virtual reality seems like such a no-brainer at this point. Many now consider it a staple VR game, and Oculus has taken notice.
The company, noted for its groundbreaking Oculus Rift, is once again pushing the boundaries of virtual reality with the Oculus Quest. Unlike the Rift, the Quest will not require a computer connection to run it, more similar to the Oculus Go, but will feature similar controllers to the Rift. The Quest will be completely wireless as well, allowing players a full range of motion within their six degrees of freedom system, without the requirement of room sensors to track movement.
Michaela Dvorak, Head of Marketing at Beat Games spoke a bit about the impact of wireless VR and the freedom it allows. “Free movement in VR is very important, especially with games where you have to move a lot. For me, the biggest plus is the accessibility of these types of devices. No PCs, no cables, no waiting—you just put it on and play.” A bit of that can be seen in the Beat Saber trailer as well, with players adding personal flair with spins and dances that would be made cumbersome if not outright impossible with a wired headset.
The Oculus Quest is set for release this Spring and will sport a similar price tag to the Rift, a cool $399. You can keep up to date with the Quest, as well as other Oculus products and news by signing up for their newsletter.
