Battletech is an upcoming PC game by Harebrained Schemes that allows players to take command of their own mercenary fleet of mechs and the mechwarriors who pilot them. Through bouts within an interstellar civil war, players will utilize turn-based combat to come out on top.
The story behind Battletech is set in the year 3025, when the galaxy is trapped within a brutal cycle of perpetual war. The war is fought by noble combat vehicles called BattleMechs. The player’s base of operations can be upgraded, mercenaries can be negotiated with, and various repairs will need to be performed in the hopes of prevailing in these dire conditions. The objective is always to release devastating combat tactics in order to defeat the enemies on the battlefield, with no room for mistakes.
Thirty different BattleMechs can be deployed in varying combinations, with the environment having a large effect on the decisions. Positionng, taking the terrain into account, and customizing the drop-ship will all affect the manner in which every alternation begins. The MechLab will allow users to upgrade and maintain their units, and replace damaged systems with items they salvage from foes on the battlefield. Battletech features full multiplayer functionality and a skirmish mode.
While the game certainly packs a punch, it does not lack a riveting story. There is a deposed ruler who is waging a war in hopes of taking back her throne. The player is an accomplice to this scheme due to their mercenary company being in complete support of her goal.
Battletech will be out next month, and is currently available for preorder on Steam.
