Battlefield 6 in Hot Water with Fans for Alleged Use of Gen AI

Recently, there’s been a lot of controversy surrounding several game development studios’ implementation of generative AI tools into their production pipeline, and in some instances, inside finished products. Black Ops 7, Codex Mortis and Postal, among others, have all popped up in the news lately with ‘AI’ in the headline–which we’ve covered–and people aren’t happy about it. So much so that beloved studios like Larian—creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, which won GOTY 2023—and Sandfall Interactive—creators of Clair Obscur, which won GOTY 2025—have had some in their fanbases lambast them after alleged instances of AI use were uncovered. The latter studio even got their Game of The Year Award from the Indie Game Awards rescinded and usurped by contender Blue Prince due to meeting disqualification criteria. And well, yet another game has been caught up in the AI allegations storm: Battlefield 6. Some players highly suspect the multiplayer first-person shooter that came out this year and snagged a sound-design accolade at The Game Awards features AI generated art in some of its cosmetics. A prevalent fan account on X posted an example of this allegation of a player card sticker in a paid bundle just a few days ago:

The sticker, which can be found in the “Windchill” cosmetic collection, can owe its accusations to what some consider to be the tell-tale bizarre artifacts of AI generated content. Besides the odd glossiness present, examples of this pointed out by users include the rifle depicted in the illustration having two barrels (which it doesn’t in the game or in real life), the lack of a trigger guard, weird proportions for the sticker’s perspective, and the dust cover seemingly being both up and down at the same time. And though this the most prevalent case of alleged AI use in BF6 floating around; it’s not the only one. One Reddit user posted a small compendium of what they suspect are other instances of AI in the game’s stickers based on inconsistencies they evaluated; such as a bat with extra bones, inaccurate leaf arrangements, and an eagle with a warped talon, among other things.

Though all of these allegations should be taken with a grain of salt, not only for obvious reasons, but also because people’s distaste towards the usage of generative AI can lead to false accusations due to an artist’s style resembling some of the surreal qualities the technology can produce. Although perhaps it’s more of an AI imitates art thing rather than the other way around.

According to an article by the BBC, EA “has been vocal” about their planned usage of AI in their products, but VP Manager Rebecka Coutaz is also paraphrased saying “…players won’t see anything made by GenAI within Battlefield 6.” That remains to be confirmed by EA in contrast to these allegations.

Julian Ebert: Although I graduated with a major in film, video games hold a special place in my heart. I love games with atmosphere, immersion, and tense gameplay loops, so my favorite games gravitate toward horror and survival shooter greats like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and the Resident Evil series. When I’m not enjoying one of those, I like to read science fiction and check movies off of my “to watch” list.
