Baki the Grappler’s Yujiro Hanma is Coming to Tekken 8

Well it’s here, the vaunted reveal for the next Tekken character has been shown at Combo Breaker 2026 and it’s another guest: Yujiro Hanma from Baki the Grappler, coming early 2027:

Following Harada’s preference for villains (though Harada himself is no longer with Bandai Namco) we’re getting the main villain of the show instead of the titular Baki himself, but many people will prefer this, as Yujiro is a giant meme machine but he’s also a genuinely fun character who’s inspired several imitators since Baki’s release in 1991. Of course, Tekken’s Baki inspired characters are typically some of the least liked characters in the entire franchise (Fahkumram, Street Fighter’s Akuma) but a character from Baki itself with manga panels and animations to pull from will no doubt provide a much more fun character for Tekken 8.

This is just a teaser, so no actual gameplay, and we’re not going to see what Yujiro actually looks like in-engine which is something that will surely be interesting to see. But we do know the general season Yujiro will be coming, Winter 2027 so early next year. Preceding him will be fellow Tekken 8 Season 3 characters Kunimitsu, Bob, and Roger Jr. Alongside the characters we’ll also be getting a new stage to play on, the “Subsea Lockdown” which also features a brand new OST, the same song that plays during Yujiro’s teaser.

Guest characters are a general mixed bag in fighting game communities, a lot of people enjoy them but there are also very vocal players who would have preferred actual series alumni over guests. There’s also the general gameplay issues Tekken 8 has currently, but time will tell if Tekken 8’s Season 3 and Yujiro Hanma will be able to win over the doubters. This will be the first Tekken Season without Harada on the team, so changes of some kind are no doubt coming.
