Back From The Grave: GameTrailer’s Content Library Acquired And Revived By IGN

Announced via a Youtube update from long-time, well-known voice of GameTrailers, Brandon Jones, we might just be looking at the future of GameTrailers! To quote Colin Clive in the infamous 1931 rendition of Frankenstein: IT’S ALIVE!  where you can find the GT crew now.

Back in February of this year, we received the sad and startling news that GameTrailers was unfortunately closing shop after 13 years in the business. Forced off their throne by combination of Youtube and GT’s new owners at Defy Media (who laid off the entire GT cast and crew, also taking down their videos, and preventing any and all updates!), the cast and crew of the series bid everyone farewell, took their final bows, and disappeared into the depths of the internet in a plume of smoke.

But not for good!

Attempts to break back out onto the scene by the GameTrailers crew was made back in March with a partnership with Easy Allies. And today, the very voice of Brandon Jones announced where we can expect to find the GT crew in the very near future, and the answer is startling.

IGN.

That’s right, you read that correct. Check out the video below if you don’t believe.

While the GT site is closed and bordered up forever, IGN has acquired their content library and will continue to make the videos available to all via Youtube! IGN has currently started to upload the videos, and the uploading process is estimated to be complete by as early as next month. This serves as a great excuse to go on a binge-watching fest, if anyone absolutely “needs” an excuse.

As of today our longtime friends at IGN have picked up all the assets from GameTrailers. Turns out it’s a great name. Although GameTrailers.com is shutting down IGN is committed to archiving GT’s massive library. That means all the countdowns, retrospectives, reviews and original shows won’t just disappear.

A few videos are already up for viewing via Youtube, thanks to IGN, and can be watched on GameTrailer’s Youtube channel!! After such a scare where everyone thought these gems were gone for good, it is a stark relief to see the GT’s work to be back up for public viewing again. The internet is definitely heaving a collective and content sigh.

When approached for a statement, representatives at IGN happily offered this statement to reporters Polygon:

We are big fans of the content GameTrailers has published over the years and want to ensure that the videos will survive online. We have added the GT YouTube channel to our network and are scouring hard drives and uploading back catalog content that never made it across.

It is indeed happy news to hear that after all their hard work and passion, the innovative and knowledgeable minds at GameTrailer’s won’t be silence nor forgotten. The cast is also continuing their work with the group Easy Access which has  launched a Twitch site (with a streaming schedule already in place), a YouTube page, a fresh new Twitter, and a Patreon account. It is great to see their past and present work continue on!
